Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a full time Intern in Kahului, Maui. MNBG is a 6-acre public botanical garden, with a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of Maui Nui’s plants and their role in Hawaiian cultural expression by providing a gathering place for discovery, education, and conservation.

Position Overview:
The Intern (3-month, full time) assists in the overall care and maintenance of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens’ (MNBG) plant collections and works on special projects related to conservation and nursery operations while receiving training to learn basic skills for native plant horticulture, urban forestry, and nursery work. The Intern reports to the Executive Director. The Executive Director may assign tasks as necessary to the overall operation of MNBG that are not specifically described in this job description. Upon successful completion of the 3-month term, Intern will be hired for a full-time position as Grounds and Maintenance Assistant.
Required:
Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health, such as adjusting watering, fertilizing, and identifying pests. Ability to pay close attention to detail, be receptive to feedback and able to respond in an efficient and accurate manner. Ability to communicate accomplishments and problems to the team.
Desired:
At least one year of professional landscaping installation and/or maintenance experience including familiarity with irrigation systems. Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems. Familiarity with Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language. Associate’s degree or higher in botany, horticulture, agriculture, natural resources, or similar field.
